Fall Is a Great Time to Look Inward

by | Oct 21, 2026 | Mindset, Self-Improvement

Fall starts to slow the world down, as the pace of summer fades and settles into something a little quieter, calmer … and unfortunately, colder. That makes it a great time to step back and take an honest look at where you are, how you’re spending your time, and what you want to change. Self-reflection doesn’t have to be you sitting around analyzing everything you’ve done wrong. It’s just giving yourself time to look more closely at what’s working, what’s not, and where you want to grow.

Take an Honest Look at Your Life

Self-reflection starts with a willingness to tell yourself the truth. Take some time to examine your efforts, relationships, health, finances, habits, and how you spend your time. Take an accurate tally of your strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself a few questions like “What…”

  • Has been going well?
  • Has drained my time or energy?
  • Am I proud of this year?
  • Have I been avoiding?
  • Do I wish I had done differently?
  • Do I want more of in my life?
  • Do I want less of?

Write your answers down, don’t just think about them. Seeing your thoughts on paper makes patterns easier to recognize and helps turn vague feelings into things you can actually address.

Pay Attention to What You’ve Learned

Wooden tiles with black letters printed on them spell out the phrase "Lessons learned"

Every year gives you experiences that offer lessons if you’re willing to pay attention. Think about the choices you’ve made, the challenges you’ve faced, and moments when things went better, or worse than you expected. Or the ones that just came out of left field and threw you off completely.

Ask yourself what those experiences taught you. Maybe you learned that you need to monitor and coordinate your time better, communicate more clearly, spend money differently, or stop putting off important decisions. Maybe you discovered that something you thought you wanted doesn’t actually fit the life you’re trying to build.

You don’t have to judge the past to learn from it. Take the lesson and use it.

Choose One Positive Change

Self-reflection is also much more useful when it leads to action. Once you’ve found something you’d like to change, choose an area of your life, or an easy action to take, and start there.

Do you want to exercise more consistently? Would you like to spend more time with your family? How about hopes of improving your financial situation? Or maybe you’d like to be more organized? Pick something specific and decide what you can do this week to move in that direction. And make sure that first step is manageable.

Make Room for What’s Next

As the year moves toward its final months, give yourself permission to slow down long enough to look inward. Take inventory of where you’ve been, appreciate how far you’ve come, and deeply consider where you want to go from here.

Then do something about what you discover.

Choose what matters, make a plan, and start taking small steps in a better direction. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to pause long enough to understand where you are and decide where you want to go next.

Oh, and a word of advice: Don’t let yourself fall into the trap of comparing your journey to someone else’s. The wrong kind of comparison can be your downfall!
