Why Mindset Matters in Entrepreneurship and in Life

by | Apr 4, 2023 | Leadership, Mindset

What’s so beautiful about life as an entrepreneur is that it’s not all business—it’s a personal journey, too. The skills and growth that are required to be successful in the professional world just so happen to make you a better all-around human being. We believe that one of these core principles is mindset. Having a positive mindset matters in entrepreneurship and life … let’s talk about why.

What is mindset?

How can we talk about how much mindset matters if we don’t define what it is? Merriam Webster defines mindset as “a mental attitude or inclination.”

We really resonate with the term mental attitude.

And let’s be clear here, our mindset can go one of two ways—it can be positive or negative. We can get into the bad habit of having a negative outlook as we face day to day life, and that will lead down a frustrating road.

Why having a positive mindset matters.

Let’s thrive, not just survive. Having a positive mindset isn’t just helpful … it’s crucial to your success in business and in life. Before getting into why mindset matters, we wanted to share a few ideas on how to cultivate a positive mindset in this fun activity.

Hopefully that got you in an uplifting headspace because now we’re going to talk about some truths. Here are four reasons why your mindset matters.

You will face challenges.

A sign that reads “dead end” is nailed to a wooden plank.

It’s inevitable. Life is life, and it’s going to have its ups and downs. The story is no different when it comes to building an empire. As entrepreneurs, we dream BIG! And when we set out to accomplish seemingly impossible goals, we are sure to meet roadblocks along the way.

Knowing what we need to do is not enough. Having an “I can do anything I put my mind to” attitude is what’s going to carry you through those hardships. Well, that and knowing your “why.”

You will encounter negative people.

Someone stands with their arm outstretched and phone in hand. They have a cardboard box over their head with a sad face drawn on it.

People won’t always see eye to eye with you, especially when you’re chasing your dreams and daring to reach for the stars.

Whether they’re strangers or family, we will always come across negative people in our lives. They might tell you that you’re crazy or that you’re wasting your time. This is when we need our positive mindset to drown out the negative noise.

Although our mindset matters when it comes to those who resist your ideas, maybe you have someone in your life that continues to bring you down. Here are some tips on how to deal with negative people on a daily basis.

You will have your own limiting beliefs.

A frame hangs on a wall with the words “we can do hard things” written in chalk.

Negative people aren’t the only ones stopping you from soaring! Sometimes, it’s our own brains that trick us into believing that we don’t have what it takes to be successful. We all have limiting beliefs. These are thoughts we have that convince ourselves “it” can’t be done.

And “it” means something different to everyone. Maybe “it” is building an empire. Maybe “it” is being having financial peace. Or maybe “it” is speaking on stage.

Don’t let yourself get in the way. If you struggle with negative self-talk, Mayo Clinic shares ways to put positive thinking into practice. Here are some of our favorite thoughts and a couple of our own:

  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  • Follow a healthy lifestyle.
  • Be open to humor.
  • Do daily affirmations.
  • Practice gratitude regularly.
  • Focus on impacting others.

You will be required to learn and grow.

A worn sticker with the words “you’re doing great” sticks on a curb.

Here’s the thing about entrepreneurship—you will be required to get outside of your comfort zone. Building a business is not easy, but the skills needed to be successful are clear … skills like communication, leadership, and financial discipline. The not so easy part is the mindset it takes to open yourself up to growth.

It takes grit and determination to continue to better yourself day after day. And because of that, mindset is everything.

Personal growth is essential!

Personal growth is a journey, but it’s one that must be taken in order to develop the positivity and persistence of an entrepreneur. There’s so much negative that is prone to meet us on our path to greatness, so let’s set ourselves up for success by building that mindset muscle.

We talk a lot about mindset in our blog. If personal growth is a priority for you, and it should be, check out this blog on, “How to Develop Mental Toughness.” We think you’ll like it!
